What the Positive Action Scheme Offers:
The Guardian‘s Social Class Scheme offers a unique opportunity to gain valuable insights into the world of journalism. Successful applicants will:
- Two Weeks of Paid Work Experience
Spend two weeks immersed in the daily workings of a top newsroom, learning from experienced journalists and editors across various departments such as Features, Multimedia, Podcasting, Business/Consumer, Sport, and more. - Hands-On Learning
Shadow experienced journalists, assist with research tasks, and contribute to editorial discussions. You’ll have the chance to pitch your own story ideas and gain practical experience in journalism. - Mentorship from an Experienced Journalist
Be paired with a mentor who will offer guidance, advice, and career tips to help you progress in the journalism industry. - Exposure to the Editorial Environment
Get a behind-the-scenes look at how a leading media organization like The Guardian creates daily content, manages editorial decisions, and shapes news coverage.
Who Can Apply:
This scheme is open to those from working-class backgrounds, defined as individuals who meet one of the following criteria:
- Attended state school or college throughout your education.
- Main household earner’s occupation when you were aged 14 is considered working-class (e.g., technical or craft occupations like motor mechanics, electricians, or manual service jobs such as postal workers, cleaners, or catering assistants).
- Eligibility for free school meals during your time at school.
- Parents did not attend university.
Applicants must also:
- Be 18 years or older.
- Have the right to work or train in the UK.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in journalism (e.g., by having articles published, involvement in student journalism, or an active blog or website).
Note: This scheme is for those at the start of their career in journalism. Experienced journalists or those who have previously received a placement at Guardian News and Media (GNM) are not eligible.
What You Need to Apply:

Additional Support:
For those who do not have accommodation in London or the ability to commute daily to the Guardian‘s office in King’s Cross, there are a limited number of grants available through the Sarah Hughes Trust. These grants will assist with accommodation and travel costs. Be sure to apply for the grant via the application form if you require this support.
